Mr Alistair Stirling
2015-2018

Alistair Stirling is a Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham. His previous/other roles include Clinical Lead NICE CG75 MSCC (2008), National Cancer Action Team Acute Oncology Measures (2011), Foundation Tutor Spinal Surgery RCSE 2005-11, Department of Health Spinal Taskforce (reports 2010, 2013), National Clinical Reference Group Complex Spinal Surgery (2012-13). His principle interests are spinal microsurgery, spinal oncology surgery and reconstruction for trauma and infection. His outside interests are court sports, skiing and sailing.

Professor Jeremy Fairbank
2015-2016

Jeremy Fairbank is Professor of Spinal Surgery in Oxford. He graduated from Cambridge University and St Thomas’s Hospital Medical School in London. He was trained in a spine fellowship at Oswestry and St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London. He has been Clinical Director of the Thames Valley Comprehensive Local Research Network since 2006. He is past-Chairman of UKSSB, past-President of the British Scoliosis Society and is President of the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine.

Mr Nick Birch
2012-2017

Nick Birch is a full-time spinal surgeon in private practice having been an NHS consultant in Northampton from 1996-2002. He is a very keen supporter of educational programmes for patients and fellow professionals and runs a patient-focussed website thebackdoor.org.uk. He is the lead clinician for the UK arm of the European Rapid Recovery Programme in Spinal Surgery. In April 2014 he was elected as Treasurer of BASS.  He co-organised BritSpine 2014 held at the University of Warwickshire. Outside of spinal surgical practice he skis, rides a motorcycle, cooks, has a diverse musical taste and likes to think he can take photographs.

Mr Lee Breakwell
2016-

Lee is a full-time NHS Spinal Surgeon in Sheffield. Once upon a time he was President of BOTA, and has served on BASS Exec and BSS Exec. He was the local host of both BASS and BSS annual meetings in Sheffield in 2009, and 2015 respectively. He is the Co-Designer of the British Spine Registry, and administers the system on behalf of BSS. He is the Director of Medical Education and Responsible Officer for Revalidation at Sheffield Children's Hospital. He has recently been elected to the Council of the BOA and will serve as Spinal representative. In his spare time he enjoys walking in the Peaks, playing badminton and occasionally a bad round of golf.

Am Rai is a full-time Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. He became President of BASS in March 2015. He graduated from Southampton University in 1990 and spent 17 years training to be a spinal surgeon. He has been a Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and BUPA Hospital, Norwich since April 2001. Most of his training was done in the south of England and Spinal Fellowships in Australia, South Africa, America and Europe.

Professor Nadine Foster

Nadine Foster is Professor of Musculoskeletal Health in Primary Care and the Director of the Clinical Trials Unit at Keele University. She is recognised internationally as an expert in musculoskeletal pain research in primary care, particularly in the field of back pain and osteoarthritis. She holds a National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Research Professorship (2012-2017) and is an NIHR Senior Investigator. Her research is published in over 130 peer-reviewed papers and she has contributed to over £23 million in research grants. She has served on the editorial board of international journals and national research funding committees, including NIHR and Arthritis Research UK. She is the President of the Society of Back Pain Research.”

Steve Vogel is Vice Principal (Research) at the British School of Osteopathy. His areas of teaching are critical thinking, survey research, ethics and research governance and writing for publication. He is an experienced supervisor at Masters and Doctoral Levels. His research interests are practitioners’ attitudes to back pain, low back and leg pain, giving and receiving reassurance, safety incidents and consent. He is Secretary of the Society of Back Pain Research.

The UK Spine Societies Board (UKSSB) is pleased to announce that Linda Pollard, CBE, JP, DL has accepted the position of Chair of the newly formed Patient Liaison Group (PLG). Linda has very wide experience in the UK Healthcare sector, commerce, academia and the Criminal Justice Service. Currently she is the Chair of the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, having previously chaired the Bradford NHS Foundation Trust, the West Yorkshire SHA, Bradford Care Trust and the Leeds/Bradford/Airedale PCT. She is also a Board Trustee of the Leeds Hospitals Charity Foundation. Until 2014 she was the Chairman/Pro-Chancellor of the University of Leeds and was honoured by the University with the award of Doctor of Law in 2013. Linda is the National Chairman of An Inspirational Journey and the national Two Percent Club - an organisation that professionally supports women in the corporate world. She was previously Deputy Chair of Yorkshire Forward (the Regional Development Agency). She is an experienced business entrepreneur having held several directorships and has extensive corporate understanding and was the Regional Chair of Coutts Bank for 6 years until 2014.
